The Bloomberg Law dockets database is the most user-friendly subscription resource available to Berkeley Law faculty and students who need access to docket sheets and the underlying filings. To register for a login to this database, Berkeley Law students and faculty should contact mlevy@law.berkeley.edu. We cannot provide logins to non-Berkeley Law affiliates.

To begin your docket search - click on the browse menu icon (three horizontal lines in the upper left corner) and select "Litigation Intelligence Center," and then fill out "Find Docket by Number" in the pane on the right (if you have court and/or docket number, this is a quick look-up), or choose an Advanced Docket Search.  You have many search options.  Here are a few tips:

  • Courts:  To search in a particular court, choose a tab at the top of the screen or use the "Select Courts" filter. If you choose a federal district or federal circuit court an additional box will open at the bottom of the screen allowing more search options, including search by "Ticker" name and "Nature of Suit".
  • Keywords: Click on the question mark icon next to the "Keywords" search box for help in constructing a keyword search.
  • Docket Number:  Because every state court uses different formatting it is hard to search state courts by docket number.  For federal courts, click on the question mark icon next to the "Docket #" search box to see how to format the docket number.
  • Party Options:  Click on the  arrow in the "Party" search box to limit your search to plaintiff, defendant, petitioner, appellant, etc.

Updating & Tracking Dockets - Once you have retrieved a docket sheet, be sure to note the "Docket Currency" date in the right sidebar.  To view changes and additions to the sheet since this date, click on "Update Docket" and then click on "Accept".  View the results by going to your e-mail inbox associated with your Bloomberg account. To receive e-mail notifications when there is an update to the docket, click on "Track Docket".

Viewing underlying documents - Once you have retrieved a docket sheet, you can view many of the underlying documents.  In the "Action" column you will see either "View" or "Request".  "View" means that the item has already been retrieved and can be read immediately by clicking on the word "View".  "Request" means that either the item is electronically available but not yet retrieved, or it is not electronically available at all - the only way to tell is to request the document. Click on the word "Request", and a box will pop up. Click on "Accept" (the dialog box may ask for a client matter number; if so, leave this blank and simply click "Accept") and then check the result by going to your e-mail inbox associated with your Bloomberg account.  If the item is electronically available, you will receive an e-mail from Bloomberg with a link to the item.  Otherwise the e-mail will read "The document you have requested requires a courier to retrieve".  This courier service is not available under Berkeley Law's academic subscription.

Coverage - Click on "Litigation & Dockets" in the left sidebar and then choose "Docket Coverage". On the U.S. map that appears, click on any state to see available federal and state courts from that state.  “Docket-Only Electronic” means that only the docket sheet is available, and underlying documents from the court in question, with a few exceptions, are not electronically available. To see foreign and international docket coverage, choose the "International" button at the top of the screen or select a country from the drop down options.

Foreign and International Dockets - Selected coverage is available for the Cayman Islands, Dubai, European Union, Hong Kong, United Kingdom, and the Royal Court of Jersey. To search, choose "Litigation & Dockets" in the left sidebar, and then "Docket Search".  Click on the  "plus" sign in the "Select Courts" box and then click on the arrow next to "International Dockets".
