SelectedWorks - Author pages: Information for FSU

This guide provides basic information about SelectedWorks pages. It discusses inclusion in the Berkeley Law SelectedWorks gallery and tips on getting started.

Getting started with SelectedWorks pages for faculty members

The Law Library will create SelectedWorks pages for all faculty members eligible for a SelectedWorks page.

Each FSU will need to create a SelectedWorks account.

Go to http://works.bepress.com and click on 'My Account' to get started. Register using your @law.berkeley.edu email address.

Look for the Selected Works Administration Tools header and click on the 'Administrative Interface' link below that header. This should display a list of faculty member SelectedWorks pages for which you have editor access. If you don't see the SelectedWorks Administration Tools header or a faculty member is not on your list, send an email to Joe Cera.

Getting started with SelectedWorks

  1. The Law Library will create the initial page for each faculty member who is eligible for a Berkeley Law branded SelectedWorks page. Faculty members who are not eligible for Berkeley Law branding are still able to create a SW page. Contact the Law Library if you have questions.
  2. Move your pointer over the faculty name and click on the 'Edit' link to get started.
  3. The initial page will have a picture and the email address of your faculty member.
  4. Populate other information sections about the faculty member using the buttons on the page:
    • Edit My Photo (email address, titles and affiliations, contact info, CV, change photo)
    • Edit About Me (same options as 'Edit My Photo')
    • Edit My Background Info (areas of expertise, courses, honors and awards, disciplines)
    • Edit Links (any URL could be added here)
    • Edit My Intro Paragraph (add an introductory paragraph)
    • Categorize My Writings (organize by subject headings or document type, show 2-line abstract preview)
    • Upload Content (upload an item - assign document type, add authors, citation, classification, add abstract, upload file or link to text, publish as metadata only, create an OpenURL) *Collect bepress Content prior to uploading content
    • Collect bepress Content (import any full-text item that currently exists in any bepress repository - more info below)
  5. Update Site button - click the 'Update Site' button when you are completed. You will receive an email when the site has been updated.

Collect bepress Content

Collecting bepress Content searches all bepress repositories for any full text items that have been uploaded and list the faculty member as an author. Collected items don't need to have the extra bibliographic data added manually and no uploading is required. This allows you to leverage the work of others by automatically including the item in the SW page with just the click of a button. Cross off any scholarship from your upload list that is collected since collected items don't need to be manually uploaded to the SW page. After collecting bepress content, choose 'Upload Content' to add data to manually add all the remaining publications on your faculty publications list.

Notes:

  • There will be duplicates. You can either select just one instance of an item or collect them all and manually withdraw duplicates later.
  • 'Full Text Items' in this context means any scholarly work that has a PDF associated with it. This will not collect any items that are metadata only or link out to the full text.

Notes:

Being able to access a scholarly work through a database and download a PDF does not mean that you are complying with copyright. If you aren't sure that the author has copyright permissions to post a work and the author isn't sure - don't post the PDF.

  • Posting the item as metadata only will provide a record of the work and an accompanying PDF can always be posted later.
  • If the item was previously published, select the radio button at the bottom of the 'Upload Content' section and the bepress system will attempt to create an OpenURL (basically the same as UC e-Links). That will provide users who have access through their own institution to find the article.
