Above the Law—lots of rabbit-holes to fall down, but make sure you know what the gossip-y, sometimes snarky folks at AtL have to say before you interview; the section on BigLaw tends to name names, but also check law firm rankings and other career search resources. The American Lawyer—annual law firm rankings and articles on law firm economics, market information, diversity initiatives, pro bono efforts, and more. The AmLaw 200 and AmLaw 100, National Law Journal 500 (NLJ500), and Diversity Scorecard are prominent rankings and offer articles on specific firms.

Corporate Counsel and Inside Counsel - more Law.com publications specifically for GCs and corporate legal departments. Browsing recent articles and headlines may give you insight into the concerns and topical areas covered by in-house counsel.

Browse legal news to find noteworthy cases being handled by a law firm or attorney or recently decided/pending before a judge; you may also uncover trends and get insight into the context of related cases or legal developments:

• Law 360 (also available in Lexis+ Legal News Hub): commercial law focus, geographic sections on Legal Industry. Search for a firm, attorney, or judge and click on News & Analysis; topical filters on the left side of the screen can give a rough notion of areas of practice (numbers of results in parentheses).
• Bloomberg Law News & Analysis tab: legal news covering many law firms. Search for firm names as specifically as possible, then date filter for recent newsworthy developments.

General News—find recent press coverage about a law firm, high-profile attorney, or judge:

• Major dailies: current coverage of the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Times via Proquest Newspapers
• Local/regional news: one of the easier news sources to use for local newspaper coverage is Access World News:
  • Drill down on the map to the USA and select  state (or click on Select Multiple States and Territories) or region (click on Region in the list of filters at the left side; select one of the 9 US regions or Select Multiple Regions)

Many leading law firms publish client advisories, newsletters, and other short articles on their areas of expertise and business development focus—some even assign summer associates to work on updating and adding them. Good places to check: 

• Bloomberg Law Law Firm Client Alerts—search by firm name (search box at top) and filter by date (left).
• Law 360 (also available in Lexis+ Legal News Hub)—search by law firm name for news about the firm and Expert Analysis articles authored by lawyers in the firm.  
• Lexology.com—free legal updates, insights, and analyses by over 900 law firms. Search and filter by firm, work area, or jurisdiction. Register to customize daily updates in specific legal areas.
