Citation Management Tools: Introduction

A brief description of using Zotero and Refworks for citation in Legal Scholarship.

no title

Citation management software records bibliographic citations for future use in generating bibliographies and footnotes in scholarly works.

A number of citation management tools are available. A relatively comprehensive list and comparison of features may be found here.

A comparison of the quality of the Bluebook style output may be found here.

If you are interested in case management tools for a class or clinic, check out CaseMap by Lexis.

How It Works

Whichever citation management software you choose, the process is roughly the same.

1. As you visit library catalogs (e.g. LawCat), full text journal databases (e.g. HeinOnline and Jstor), and Journal Indexes (e.g. LegalTrac and PAIS), and websites for Zotero--you 'grab' citations using the tools associated with the database or the citation management software.

2. Organize these citations into libraries and edit or annotate them as needed.

3. As you write your paper or article, use the'plugins' associated with the citation management software to insert citations into the main text or footnotes of the document, selecting from hundreds of citation styles (including BlueBook).
