Generative AI Guide for Law Students: Terminology

This guide provides an overview of generative AI and addresses how this technology is being used in legal practice. It also covered general GenAI news and tips.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is the branch of computer science focused on the theory, development, and design of computer systems that have the ability to mimic human intelligence and thought or perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. Machine learning & deep learning are subsets of AI.  (Image: Lior Drukker, et al, Introduction to AI in Ultrasound Imaging; used under CC BY 40)

Neural Networks

Neural Networks are “a subset of machine learning and are at the heart of deep learning algorithms. Their name and structure are inspired by the human brain, mimicking the way that biological neurons signal to one another.”

Generative AI (GenAI)

GenAI is category of AI that creates content – including text, images, video, audio, and computer code – in response to a user’s input prompts and based on training data embodied in the AI model.

Large Language Models (LLMs)

A large language model (LLM) is a type of GenAI that is trained to understand and generate human language.

LLMs are trained on vast and diverse amounts of text data; they can generate prose, understand conversations, create images and videos, write computer code, and more.

A *very* basic way of understanding these systems is that they “predict” the next word in a sentence.
