Translations

English translations are often available for laws of other countries, especially in the area of business transactions.

Issues to consider:

  • Not all laws are translated into English.
  • Most translations are not official or authoritative.
  • Some translations are not accurate or up-to-date.
  • Pay close attention to the source of the translation.

Translations come from a variety of resources: freely available websites, commercial databases, books, journal articles.
Some materials are only available as summaries or are generally not translated:

  • Case law (especially from lower courts)
  • Regulatory/Administrative law
  • Forms
  • Practice materials
  • Local laws (state, provincial, etc.)
