Preemption Checking: Checklist

3. Search Full-Text Legal Articles

  • Lexis+: Select "Secondary Materials" and "Law Reviews and Journals" before entering search terms.
  • Westlaw: Select "Secondary Sources" and check filter on left for "Law Reviews and Journals" before entering search terms.
  • HeinOnline: Under "Browse Databases by Name" select "Law Journal Library." (Coverage goes back to the first issue for most law journals.) Use Advanced Search (and check the Search Help pull-down for tips on using Advanced Search). Coverage tends to begin from v.1, no.1.
  • Google Scholar will link you through to many (though not all) full-text sources subscribed by UCB databases, but also picks up many working papers (such as SSRN), abstracts, technical reports, etc. and will link through to HeinOnline.

Each of these tools provides information on where the article has been cited and how many times. Use these features to find related literature and to keep your research current. Check coverage dates for each resource.
