Source Collection 1-2-3: ... from Non-Law Periodicals

A triage approach to collecting source materials cited in journal article manuscripts

Note about news articles

Exactly identical versions of newspaper or magazine articles may be hard to find. For example, the same article may differ (including headlines and pagination!) between East and West Coast editions or between print and online editions.

  • Print/PDF copies may be impossible to find. There are online sources for page image copies from selected 18th, 19th and early 20th century newspapers and magazines (consult a Reference Librarian).
  • The main library (Doe) has a few newspapers/magazines in print or microform, which you can collect in person from the current unbound periodicals collection or the Newspapers & Microforms Library (note limited hours and bring a USB flash drive for free scans).
  • But many (especially more recent) news publications are impossible to get in full text, or available only in non-page image formats.

Non-law journals, newspapers, magazines

Online by article title

If not found in UCLS books + articles or Google Scholar (see tips on "Low-hanging fruit" in this guide), the citation may be faulty; try searching again using:

  • a few keywords from the article title (instead of an exact phrase search) and the author's last name - this may turn up the article or other materials that cite to the article with corrected or more complete publication details
  • a phrase or sentence directly quoted from the source article (here it is useful to have the full text of the manuscript/draft that is under edit) - search as an exact phrase enclosed with quotation marks

Online or in print by journal name

If the above steps do not yield a full-text, online version, or if you are required to obtain a PDF/page image copy, double-check (and look for a print alternative) by using the UCLS Journal Search finder:

  • Search for the name of the publication (not the article title), using whole words (not abbreviations) and phrases if known (journal personality social system or "Journal of Personality and Social Systems" - not J. Pers. & Soc. Sys.)
  • If UCB does not have full-text online access that includes the date of your source article, but does have print or microform versions, go to the campus location (see hours and map) to scan (bring a flash drive), or click the Request NRLF Article/Chapter Scan button

Not available (online or print) on campus

If an article is not available online (as PDF or otherwise) and is not available anywhere on the UCB campus, you will have to request interlibrary loan service, which may take additional time for research and delivery:

  • if there is a UCLS record for the journal (see above tips on Journal Search in UCLS), click on the "Request Other Issue" or "Request Through Interlibrary Loan" option and fill out as much information as you can
  • if you don't even find the journal in UCLS, fill out an ILL Request form (as much info as you have)
  • on either of the above forms, if you do not have an ending number, add note: "please copy all pages of the article, and please copy the issue cover and issue table of contents page if available"

Track and manage interlibrary requests at My Requests in the pulldown menu under your account name when you are logged in on UCLS.

If you are working off-campus, set up remote access (Proxy/VPN) for news databases subscribed by the main campus library.
