Consumer Protection Law: Federal Regulations

Federal Regulations

Federal agencies regulate various aspects of consumer law, including the Federal Trade Commission, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the Consumer Financial Protection Board. They publish their rules and other guidance material in the Federal Register and Code of Federal Regulations (C.F.R.). Some selected sections dealing with consumer protection:

  • 12 C.F.R. ch. X (§ 1002 et. seq.)—rules and regulations of the Consumer Financial Protection Board
  • 16 C.F.R.—rules and regulating various commercial practices effecting consumers; ch. I for Federal Trade Commission; ch. II for Consumer Protection Safety Commission
  • 17 C.F.R. pt. 160 (§ 160.1 et. seq.)—Commodity Futures Trading Commission regulations issued pursuant to Gramm-Leach-Billey Act consumer privacy protections
