Computing Guide: Eduroam (WiFi/Wireless)

A guide to computing at Berkeley Law.

WiFi/Wireless and Eduroam Setup

Our Wireless Handout PDF with simple/basic instructions can be found here.

Eduroam is the recommended wireless network for enrolled students. It is the most secure option and gives you complete access to campus resources and databases.

Berkeley-Visitor is an open wireless network for campus guests. It does not grant access to restricted campus resources/databases. Email clients (like Outlook or Apple Mail) won’t work while connected to it, and MobilePrint won't work either.

To connect to eduroam, you need to set your eduroam key (password) first:

  1. Visit https://wifi-keys.berkeley.edu/ and log in with your CalNet username & passphrase.

  2. Click on Create New and proceed through any prompts to set up a new account. A randomized key will be generated and displayed – this will be your eduroam key.

    • PLEASE NOTE: Some users have encountered problems/confusion with the randomly generated keys utilizing characters which are hard to distinguish from one another in the key website's font - 2 such examples are a character which can look like either '1' (numeral one) or 'l' (lowercase 'L') and a character which can look like either '0' (numeral zero) or 'O' (capital 'o'). If you receive an assigned random password using one of these characters, you may wish to click the option to regenerate for a new password that doesn't utilize these confusing characters.

  3. Click Create Account to set/confirm your key. Make sure to save/note your password somewhere, as you cannot come back to the site and view it again later!

After setting your key, connect to eduroam on your devices using your full Berkeley email ([CalNet ID]@berkeley.edu) as your username & your eduroam key as your password. If you receive a prompt about security/certificates, click "Continue," "Trust," or "Connect" to proceed.

You should not reset/generate new passwords if you want to connect additional devices to the eduroam network - use the same eduroam key for all your devices.

If you receive an error message when trying to connect, first DOUBLE-CHECK that you are typing in your username and password correctly. Other common steps you might need to take:

  • forget or turn off autojoin for Berkeley-Visitor (directly switching between the 2 campus wireless networks can cause problems/errors the first time you try to connect)
  • remove any saved/pre-set DNS servers, proxies, IP addresses, or other network settings (DNS and IP must be set to automatic/DHCP - which is typically the default setting unless you have previously made changes on your device!)
  • remove/forget any previous eduroam accounts from other institutions (usually you can do this by simply "forgetting" the saved eduroam wireless network on your device)
  • Or stop by/contact us for help!

(If you have lost/forgotten your eduroam key, use the Manage Account link on https://wifi-keys.berkeley.edu/ to generate a new passcode. Make sure to save/note it this time!)

Eduoram Beyond Berkeley

If you are a Berkeley student or affiliate, you can use your Berkeley eduroam credentials to access the eduroam network both here on campus and at other affiliated campuses worldwide. If you are visiting from another eduroam-affiliated institution, you can also use your home institution's credentials to log into the eduroam network here at Berkeley.

More information about this service can be found here and at eduroam.us (for US information) or eduroam.org (for international information). Please note that tech support/assistance for visitors struggling to connect to eduroam at a different institution is often limited, as most institutions do not extend tech support services to non-affiliates.

Other Campus Wireless Networks

You can see more information about all of Berkeley's campus wireless networks, including a comparison table of the features of each wireless network, here: https://technology.berkeley.edu/wi-fi.

Berkeley-Visitor

Berkeley-Visitor is a wi-fi service intended for visitors on campus. It provides basic Internet access to websites and allows users to use VPN services to connect to their home institutions or enterprises. Berkeley-Visitor is not intended for use by members of the campus community who have access to eduroam, and does not provide access to UCB VPN services or proprietary databases and resources.

Our IT department does not provide technical support for this network. More information can be found here.

Berkeley-IoT

The Berkeley-IoT ("Internet of Things") wireless network is mainly intended for certain kinds of devices that cannot connect easily or function properly using eduroam's authentication method. Berkeley-IoT is not really intended for laptops, tablets, and smartphones (though they are able to connect to it) - common use-cases for this network include gaming consoles and streaming devices that students may wish to use in their dormitories, or projectors, audiovisual and lab equipment used in some campus facilities. You should always try to use eduroam first, but if you think you have a device that might benefit from Berkeley-IoT, you can read more about the network here and here (FAQ).
